City Of Fairmont issued the following announcement on Jul 21.
SCAMS - BE SAFE - BE SMART
Should you get a call, email or text message threatening that your utility services are going to be SHUT OFF unless IMMEDIATE payment is made, it is likely a SCAM. Scammers want to scare you into making payment BEFORE you have time to confirm what they are telling you.
If you receive communication indicating your account is subject to disconnection, please call Fairmont Public Utilities directly. DO NOT RELAY on the telephone number or email address the SCAMMER is sharing with you.
If you get an email message that asks for personal information, reach out to the City to confirm email legitimacy.
Know the FACTS! Anyone who pressures you to pay or give them your personal information is likely a SCAMMER!
