CITY OF FAIRMONT

NOTICE OF FILING 

FOR 

GENERAL ELECTION

YOU WILL PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that filings for the November 8, 2022 General Election will open on August 2, 2022 and continue until August 16, 2022.  Anyone wishing to become a candidate must have maintained residence in the district from which the candidate seeks election for at least 30 days before the general election, be at least 21 years of age and be a registered voter in Fairmont.

Positions to be filled at the November election are:

- Mayor

- One Council Member from Ward 1

- One Council Member from Ward 3

All terms are for four years.

You may file at the City Clerk’s Office, 100 Downtown Plaza, between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, beginning August 2, 2022 through August 16, 2022.  A $5.00 filing fee must accompany the application.

In place of the filing fee, the candidate may present a petition at the time of filing an affidavit.  The petition may be signed by an individual eligible to vote for the candidate.  The number of signatures required is the lesser of: 500 signatures or 5 percent (5%) of the total number of votes cast in the municipality, ward or other election district at the preceding general election at which that office was on the ballot.  (M.S. Sec. 204B.11, Subd. 2)

A candidate's name may also be placed on the ballot by an application signed by not less than five (5) voters and filed with the City Clerk.  The application must contain the same information about the candidate as the affidavit of candidacy.  A copy must be given to the proposed candidate before filing.  Proof that the candidate received the copy must be provided by the candidate's endorsement on the application or a separate affidavit attesting to receipt.  (M.S. Sec. 205.13, Subd. 1)  A five dollar ($5.00) filing fee is due when the voters file the petition.
