Minnesota's unemployment rate rose to 9.9% compared to April's seasonally adjusted rate of 8.7%, according to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development.
"Our economy is facing an unprecedented challenge, which these numbers reflect. Slight job increases this month are a positive sign, but the employment rebound will continue to vary greatly by sector," Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development Commissioner Steve Grove said in a statement.
In May, the state added 9,800 payroll jobs, while the private sector increased the workforce by 27,500. Industries who saw the largest gains included leisure and hospitality, which increased by 13,800 jobs, food service, retail trade and construction.
The government saw the biggest losses in May. Those jobs decreased by 17,700, a majority of those lost jobs were from local governments. Manufacturing and information sectors also saw job losses.
