Were students of Heron Lake-Okabena School District able to meet MCA and MTAS Reading testing expectations in 2021-22 school year?

Heron Lake-Okabena School District ranked first in the Jackson County for test participation, with 140 students taking the Reading portion of the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment and the Minnesota Test of Academic Skills in the 2021-22 school year, according to the Minnesota Department of Education.

The number of Heron Lake-Okabena School District students taking the tests in the 2021-22 school year rose by 6.1% over the previous year.

Heron Lake-Okabena School District's students achieved an average Reading proficiency rate of 34% in 2021-22 school year.

10th-grade students stood out with 26% of them exceeding standards in Reading, which was the highest recorded proficiency at the district.

On the other hand, 10th-grade students had the most room for improvement, with 57% not meeting the expected standards.

Heron Lake-Okabena School District encompasses schools within Jackson County and has a main office in Okabena.

Minnesota students take the MCA annually (or the MTAS, for students with cognitive disabilities) to determine their academic readiness. Not every grade is tested each year.

Analysis from the Nation’s Report Card showed Math and Reading scores have fallen significantly in the last decade. Science scores have been steady in recent years.

Minnesota Department of Education issues could lead to data irregularities.
