County Of Yellow Medicine recently issued the following announcement.
Hammer Township Continental Farm
James and Nancy Christie owned the 'Continental Farm' in Hammer Township. It was called the Continental Farm because James took a position with the 'Continental Fire Insurance Company'.
On May 12, 1912, the Christie's house was struck by lightning and damaged to the amount of $500, for which damage they received insurance. The roof was torn off the house, the sides were split from top to bottom, and holes were torn through the cement foundation. Dishes were knocked off the pantry shelves and scattered over the floor, and the interior of the house was torn up generally. The house did not catch fire.
At the time of the bolt, Nancy was passing between the house and a large tree. The tree was split from top to bottom, a dog standing near was killed and Nancy was seriously hurt. She was knocked down and her clothing set afire. After some delay the fire was extinguished by the hired girl. Nancy was not expected to live, but she recovered after having spent nearly three months in bed.
