County Of Yellow Medicine issued the following announcement on Aug. 16.
Swedes Forest Scientific and Natural Area
Yellow Medicine County
Bedrock outcrops are a defining feature of this Minnesota River Valley SNA, which straddles the border between Yellow Medicine and Redwood Counties. Pink, medium-grained quartz known as Sacred Heart granite—roughly 2,650 million years old—lies at or near the surface across much of the site. The outcroppings create a unique environment for rare, state-listed species such as Wolf's spike-rush and water-hyssop, both associated with shallow pools in the rock where rainwater gathers, and the common five-lined skink, which hibernate in rock crevices.
