County Of Yellow Medicine issued the following announcement on Aug. 12.
The Brittle Prickly Pear Cactus grows natively in Yellow Medicine County. This cactus is associated with granite rock outcrops that were exposed as glacial Lake Agassiz broke around 10,000 years ago and formed the glacial River Warren.
The River Warren scoured the valley and exposed some of the oldest rock in the world. The cactus thrives in these areas and on these rocks.
