Southwest Minnesota State University professor Joan Gittens donates $100 to Dean Phillips' campaign

Joan Gittens, a professor at Southwest Minnesota State University, donated $100 to Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party candidate Dean Phillips, according to the Federal Election Commission.

According to records, there have been $575 in campaign contributions made by individuals affiliated with Southwest Minnesota State University as of November 3. Approximately 82.6 percent, or $475, of these contributions were made to Democratic Party candidates and committees.

Donna Nieckula's contribution of $475 to Democratic Party Elizabeth Warren was the largest contribution made by someone affiliated with Southwest Minnesota State University since January 1, 2019.

According to an Inside Higher Ed analysis of federal elections data, individuals that were affiliated with colleges and universities have donated five times more money to Joe Biden than to President Trump. A study by Pew Research in 2017 found that 58 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents thought colleges and universities have a negative impact on the way things are going in this country.
