The MCA and the Alternate Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (Alt MCA) are statewide tests designed to gauge students’ proficiency in meeting Minnesota’s academic standards and complying with legislative requirements. The tests cover math, reading, and science, depending on the students’ grade level. While the majority take the MCA, eligible students receiving special education services may take the Alt MCA instead.
According to Minnesota’s Report Card, statewide proficiency on Minnesota’s MCA exams has decreased compared to pre-pandemic levels. Math proficiency declined by over 7% since 2019, and reading proficiency saw a drop nearing 5%.
