The nursing facility provided 48 available beds, which is nine above the county average at the start of 2026. Throughout the quarter, Hendricks Community Hospital supported an average of 45 residents per day.

During the same period, Avera Sunrise Manor ranked as the county’s second largest nursing home, offering 30 available beds.

Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate the population of older Americans continues to rise as younger cohorts decline. The population aged 65 and over grew by 13% from 2020 to 2024, while those under 18 declined by 1.7%. The older adult population in the country has increased significantly during the past century, from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million in 2024.
A 2021 report estimates that close to half of those ages 65 and up—about 28 million people—could require long-term services and supports, with more than a third likely to need nursing home care at some point.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
