The MCA and Alternate Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (Alt MCA) are statewide assessments evaluating progress toward Minnesota’s academic standards and fulfilling federal and state requirements. Subjects tested include math, reading, and science, depending on grade level. The majority of students take the MCA, while eligible students who receive special education services may participate in the Alt MCA.
Overall, proficiency rates on Minnesota’s MCA assessments have declined when compared with pre-pandemic figures, according to Minnesota’s Report Card. Mathematics proficiency, for example, has dropped by over 7% since 2019, and reading proficiency saw a decrease of nearly 5%.
