Good Samaritan Society – Windom emerged as the largest nursing home in Cottonwood County during the first quarter of 2026, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

The facility reported 63 available beds, surpassing the county average by 15 beds in the same period. On average, it served 59.8 residents throughout the quarter.

With an overall CMS rating of 1 out of 5, Good Samaritan Society – Windom fell below the Minnesota nursing home average of 3.2.

Good Samaritan Society – Mountain Lake was the county’s second largest nursing home for the quarter, providing 48 beds, while Good Samaritan Society – Westbrook ranked third with 32 beds.

Cottonwood County, Minnesota, had three non-profit nursing homes in total.

Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show the nation’s senior population is expanding while younger cohorts decrease. Americans age 65 and older rose by 13% between 2020 and 2024, while those under 18 declined by 1.7%. The country’s older population has risen significantly over the last century, from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 study indicates that close to half of adults in this age bracket, approximately 28 million people, could require long-term services and support. The study also projects that more than a third of this group might eventually need nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
