U.S. Census Bureau estimates show a growing older adult population nationwide, with the segment aged 65 or older rising by 13% between 2020 and 2024 as the population under age 18 declined by 1.7%. Over the past 100 years, the older population in the United States has grown sharply, up from just 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.
A 2021 study indicates that nearly half of older Americans—about 28 million people—could need long-term services and support. The study also forecasts that more than a third of that group may ultimately use nursing home care.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
