According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the adult population within the country is expanding even as numbers within younger groups are declining. From 2020 to 2024, the number of U.S. residents ages 65 and older grew by 13%, while those under 18 decreased by 1.7%. The older adult population in the U.S. has increased substantially since 1920, rising from 4.9 million individuals to over 61 million in 2024.
A 2021 study indicates nearly half within this demographic—close to 28 million people—are projected to need long-term services and supports. It further estimates that more than one-third may eventually require nursing home care.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, which provides insurance education. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially.
